The black ignition key has a microchip in it, so it serves two purposes:
1. the cut of the key satisfies the lock fit to turn on the bike
2. the micro chip insures the key is not a copy and electronically
interlocks the ignition, only a programmed black key can start the bike.
The red key is for the device that programs the black key should you want a
new one made. This will take a special black ey blank that has the micro
chip in it and only the dealer can program. Then the key usually has to be
cut (a separate step) either by the dealer or a lock smith.
This is your security system that prvents someone from getting a copy of
your black key or defeating the security system.
