I would not bother speeding money just to get the red key. If you need it
there are some ways to get the bike back running :
On a 2003 ST4S (same engine type 996) there are some "performance" ECU
that do not check the key code (possibly ducati performance, or the ones
made in Australia).
Here in Lyon France a guy crashed his bike, it was cheaper to buy the
performance kit (2 mufflers +ECU) + dash than changing the dashboard, ECU.
If you want to be prepared set the money aside, check with the ECU
manufacturers or reseller (I think desmotimes had one of these) to be
ready to get one fast in case of troubles.
But actually needing a red key is a remote situation.
Check with your insurance though : they might demand that you show the
keys (all of them red included) in the event of thief to show that you did
not let them on the bike.
