the red key is fuctionally a normal key as well as an immobilisor 'master key'. it's used to:
1/ turn on the bike, but not recommended in case you lose it.
2/ initiate a key coding procedure, needed if you want to activate a new key or recode the keys you have to exclude an old key.
3/ code a new ecu to the immobilisor (inside the dash on '02 s4).
4/ code a new immobilisor to the ecu.
it's the sort of thing that you don't need until you need it, and then you really need it. realistically, you can replace anything and have the bike still run with virgin ecu or dash, but it might start a key coding countdown on the dash everytime you key on and the immobilisor won't work.
all immobilisor bikes prior to the 1098 have 1 red and 2 black keys. if you have only 2 black then you didn't get the red.
