I have to admit that I have no real idea of the function of the red key as my bike has always worked fine with either black key. Can someone out there explain, in 100 words or less, why I have a red key, how it differs from the black keys and what I should do with it? Right now it lives in my work bag along with the black key and other assorted spare keys. Later, Moonbeam

This whole deal sounds pretty fishy. It almost sounds like a stolen or a
salvage title bike. Are you certain that the bike really only has 139 miles.
New gauges perhaps??? A close look at the obvious (tires, brake disks and
pads, oil, nooks and crannies) should make it possible to confirm the bike
as a truly low mileage bike.
If it is a clean (provenance wise) bike, there is no real reason for the Red
Key not being part of the deal. Your seller sounds questionable. In any
case, I am not aware of any legit way to get around the Red Key. You might
want to consider getting your money back. As the owner of a bike WITH a Red
Key, I am happy Ducati makes it hard and expensive.

I recently purchased a 2002 Monster S4 with only 139 miles on it.
Unfortunately it didn't have the red master key with it. I had the
owner include the statement that he would pay the replacement cost
for the key in the bill of sale. Unfortunately he refused to pay once
he found out the cost. I have seen info on the net that this can be
replaced for $750. Every dealer I contact wants $3200. Ebay had some
one that said they could create a Black copy of the red key if I sent
them the Dash, ECU, and a black key. When I asked them if they
covered damages to the parts if they messed up I got no reply. I
didn't want to take the risk sending the parts to them. Can anyone
give me some suggestions on this.
