greetings earthlings:
I decided to see if I could improve the riding position of my '96 900 SS by moving the foot pegs. I was able to shift them forward by 42mm and down by 19mm, by fabricating two brackets of anodized 6061 aluminum. Maybe that doesn't seem like a lot, but my knees say it is a big change for the better! I did have to shorten the shift linkage about an inch, to compensate for the foot pegs moving forward. This change uses the stock pegs and brackets. I have yet to drag any hard bits when I ride, so we shall see if that holds true with the pegs closer to the ground. I just measured, drilled and chamfered the 8mm holes, and then shaped the 1/4" thick by 2" wide by 5 1/2" long piece with hand tools, and removed the tool marks. One short evening's work, not counting the test rides. No photos yet, but soon.
Got to see the Iron Butt start and finish from here in Saint Louis. One couple had an auxiliary fuel tank mounted between the hard bags and attached to the rear fender on their BMW K1200GT? (full fairing and hard bags). It came loose and ate the rear tire, luckily they didn't crash. New tire and a few straps got them to the finish. A Goldwing finished with a worn rear tire - cord showing - 8 inches long by 1 inch wide. Interesting solutions to problems I don't think I will ever have.
ciao,
Fred Hecker
