Since everyone is having so much fun with the topic, thought you would like to know the Sardinian point of view.

Whats crazy is Rossi moving to england to save taxes when the English 
Move to France. Most racers try to live in Monte Carlo  like Bayliss .

And finally, perhaps the best answer you will find, from our man in Sardegna :-)

Not really. He did a rather tricky trick: he kept his domicile in Tavullia, 
Italy but he moved his residence to London, UK. He did this to take 
advantage of a British law that allows people who are resident but not 
domiciled in the UK to declare only the income earned in the UK, and not 
those earned abroad. Basically, Rossi only get taxed in Britain for the 
earnings from the British GP. His contract with Yamaha and his fat sponsor 
contracts are entirely tax-free. The Italian tax agency put some detectives 
to follow him and apparently they have proof that when he's not around the 
world racing he spends most of hist time in Italy, where he owns a house. 
This makes him liable to declare all his income to the Italian State.
By the way, Italian gossip magazines say that Rossi is having an affair with 
Sardinian starlet Elisabetta Canalis http://www.elisabettacanalis.com/site/ 
and they are enjoying themselves in Sardinia right now. If I meet them on 
the beach I will tell him to stop being silly and pay his taxes or I will 
send an Australian tax agent to chase him.
