Hi,
    The first thing you need to do is to check the accuracy of the 
installed voltmeter.
Analog voltmeters bought at most parts stores are notoriously 
inaccurate. Also check to
see where the positive lead is connected. It should be connected to the 
main feed wire to
the fuse panel. It's probably a brown wire from the main relay depending 
on the year of your 900.
Check the accuracy of the voltmeter with a good digital meter. Then 
check the voltage at the battery.
   There  should  be around  14.2v at  the battery  terminals  with the  
engine at  3000 rpm.
Given the position of the battery in relationship to engine heat it 
could be somewhat less and still
keep the battery charged. Maybe 13.4v on the low side to 14.8v on the 
high side although these
values change due to many other conditions.
