I had pretty much the same problem on my '97 748...which was of my own cause.?
For the?'stalling', I inadvertantly damaged the?connector between the stator and the regulator when I was messing around with my battery tray. Pulled one of the wires out of the connector?enough to cause problems, but not enough to?think it was broken when you looked at it.? I could still jump the bike, and it would run down the road fine.?But, it?would stall in lower RPM's and wouldn't charge the battery.? I thought it was the stator initially.?My stalling occurred when?coming to a stop, sine the bad connection couldn't keep up with the engine, the brake lights and the turn signals.??Before I started pulling the case apart and looking for a used stator on eBay, I?had my brother come over with his multimeter.??He spent a few years at an ATV shop and helped me determine that the stator was still charging, and he said regulators rarely go bad.??I was hoping?he was right cause the haynes manual said you could fry the regulator?if you don't know what you're doing, and you try to test it.? So?assuming those two parts were working, it took about 10 minutes to find the culprit.?We replaced it with some connectors from Checker and?the bike's still doing fine.?
So to get to the point, yes, it makes sense.? I think you've corrected the problem.??Wiring has always been my achilles heel too.? Between motorcycles and jeeps, you'd think I would know more about wiring by now, but I don't.?:-)? I also had the starter rebuilt a few years back.? Wasn't as bad to pull it out as I thought it would be.??It still starts better than anytime before I had it rebuilt.

Dude,
Just about all of the really painful problems I have has with
motorcycles in general has been the wiring harness. From the RD400
through the Monster 900. I am just hoping that the starter never
needs replacing, that nut on the bottom looks like it is permanent.

You can never have a dull time if you somehow manage to say the wrong thing.
