[Ducati] AMA & Ducati 848 for the uninitiated

I was checking out the DucatiUSA site this afternoon and saw an entry  
in the racing news section about Jimmy Moore racing a "Project 848"  
bike at the west coast races.  I'm wondering the following:

-Where did an 848 engine come from?  Is this a custom creation of DMD  
or is this factory supplied?
-Does an 848 on the track mean we can count on something coming to  
our local shops in the near future?  I know 1098 capacity is maxed  
out, but would the 848 come from the same line/assemblers?
