Harlyn, first thing is to determine in which direction to go, spark or fuel.
Next step, put in fresh plugs and give her a crank fror about 5 seconds.
Pull the plugs and look to see if they are dry or wet. If wet then a spark
issue is probably your area of concern. If dry then start looking for fuel
pressure at the injectors, listen for injector click. At least this can help
you narrow the no start issue. As far as smoking the battery cables, it
could be from to much availible amps from the jumper or just overheating the
stock cables from the long duration of usage. This is assuming your belts
are in good condition and you dont have a large rat hibernating in you air
box...;-}>
