Bayliss loses most of finger in crash

Australian Troy Bayliss has lost most of a finger after a high-speed
crash in this weekend's world superbike round at Donington in England.

Surgery shortly after the accident failed to save the little finger of
his right hand, which was trapped between his bike and the tarmac as he
slid off.

Bayliss reportedly lost the top two bones of the finger which was
crushed beyond repair.

The incident happened five laps into race one after the defending world
superbike leader broke away from the pack to lead.

Ducati team spokesman Julian Thomas said Bayliss had been rushed to
Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in an attempt to repair the finger.

"Basically he lost most of the bone on the little finger and they
decided immediately to take him to hospital," Thomas told Crash.Net.Radio.

Thomas said Bayliss had wanted to saddle up again for the second race
but the team refused on medical advice because of the possibility of an
infection.

The crash, at the dangerous Coppice corner, came out of the blue,
according to Thomas.

"It was a bit of a highside. He was accelerating coming into Coppice and
the rear of the bike just snapped away from him," he said.

"He was quite winded all over and his hand got caught under the bike."

It is uncertain whether the Australian will be fit to ride in the next
round of the series in Valencia in Spain in two weeks.

Bayliss, who turned 38 last Friday, had dominated the meeting, heading
the qualifying sessions and snaring pole position for the first race.

His young British rival James Toseland, took out race one on a Honda
from Australia's Troy Corser on a Yamaha.

Corser also managed a podium in race two, finishing third behind his
teammate, Japan's Noriyuki Haga, who staggered Italian Max Biaggi by
seizing the lead on the final turn with just seconds remaining.

Bayliss breathed life back into his world superbike defence at Phillip
Island last month but has now slid down to sixth in the championship,
behind Toseland, Biaggi, Haga, Corser and Ducati rider Lorenzo Lanzi.

Corser said he was only "reasonably happy" with his results.

"I felt comfortable throughout all the practice sessions this weekend
and feel I should have got higher," Corser said.

A partisan crowd was urging Toseland on for his first clean career sweep
but he was halted by a mechanical problem which ground his Honda to a halt.

"I was so relieved to win race one because of the pressure of riding in
front in your home race, so it was just great to win again," Toseland said.

"In race two I had a problem with the quick shifter and it cut the
engine and that was that.

"I felt really confident about winning the second race as well but a
double win has eluded me again, even if I'm still leaving with the
championship lead," he said.

In world supersport, Yamaha-backed Australians Kevin Curtain and Broc
Parkes were spectators at Donington after both broke their collarbones
in Friday morning's rain-affected opening practice session, sliding off
on the same corner.
