I once read (but not sure) that manufacturers are beginning to build RR
units using high-speed high-power semiconductor switchs and pulse width
modulation to control the output voltage, instead of dumping the energy to
some diodes.
Low-voltage-high-current power electronics nowadays are much more advanced
than it was.
