Subject: RE: [Ducati] Misc ponderings about regulators

I have to admit that, even with the faring off, I have been unable to
physically locate the regulator on my ST4s although I assume it is located
near the battery box. Anyone out there got a clue? Might be important to
know if it fails a long way from home like my friend's VFR did.
Also, I found a site, for aftermarket heated clothing, that lists the
wattage of various motorcycles along with the wattage used in "normal
operation". According to them an 03 ST4s has a 520 watt alternator, uses
about 285W in normal operation and has about 245 watts available for
accessories. I assume normal operation means low beam so running in high
beam would still mean that 175 watts is still available for accessory use or
being translated into heat by the voltage regulator. I use an electric vest
in the winter, there should be no problem with capacity and in fact I have
ridden it a lot in the winter without any sign of the battery running down.
Does this seem right? sure sounds like a lot of wasted energy to me. The
heat generated by a couple of 200 watt bulbs radiating from my "shunt
regulator" and contained within the faring does seem a cause for concern.

My 907's regulator gave up after 14 years and 32,000 miles. It happened
100 miles from home of course. I had heard good things about the Electrex
units so I ordered one. After waiting 3 weeks for it to come I found out
they were having trouble getting them shipped over from Taiwan. I found one
at regulatorrectifier.com made by Rick's. It was only $99.00 and came right
away. Works good so far.
