Connectors on the older Ducatis are cause for concern. I have had both the connector from my alternator wires and the connector to the starter relay fail. The connector from the alternator on the right side of the bike near the battery slowly increased in resistance as it got hot during my track days. Resistance finally increased to the point where the battery would not charge anymore. The voltage would start dropping and I would first see the problem when trying to start the bike. It would turn over slow then not at all. I found the problem by charging the battery and putting a volt meter across the +/- terminals after starting the bike. As the bike revs, the voltage should increase up to about 13.4 volts or so. Mine would not increase at all so I know the battery was not charging. I removed the connector in question and simply crimped the remaining wires together with a crimp connector. Problem solved.

Another problem I had was the connectors to the starter relay; the little round component near the battery. The connector corroded and loosened up and the bike would not start. I cleaned the connections and made sure that contact was made. It fixed the problem. So I would check those areas first.

normal.

Hi

I have just finished racing season with my Duc which I enjoy very
much. At the last session I started to having a problem with starting
the bike with the right hand push button. I ended up getting some
friends to push start me.

This happened just one time before a couple of months ago, and when I
mentioned it in servicing there was no problem of it starting at that
time. I noticed after 2 practice sessions at the track, then the bike
started as per normal the rest of the day. But as soon as I tried it
at home it wouldn't start again. I have read your FAQ's and I
understand the side stand could be a problem but this was
disconnected over a year ago by the person I bought it from. The fuel
pump does kick in as soon as the ignition is turned on, but there is
nothing when you press the switch. Could the Switch be the problem
and if it is, how do I know that it is bad? I also hear a click when
the ignition is turned on which I understand as being the relay. Any
info would be appreciated.

Barry
