Yes prop/side stand same thing.

By kneeling so I could view the sight glass, it is surprising how little
force is needed to keep it vertical.  Getting it to the vertical takes a
good tug to get it up off of the stand.

I'm not sure if by "prop stand" you mean side-stand (UK-US translation
issue perhaps) or a rear stand of some sort.  My method for
checking/filling is as follows:

1.  Grab wife.  Take her to garage.
2.  Get on bike, sit it up straight and get wife to make sure the bike
is exactly level when viewed from the front.
3.  lean over and look at site glass.

I always do this with the oil at normal temperatures.  Add/remove as
needed.
