Larry as Alex suggested SPs rare as hens teeth, dual injectors not an uncommon change esp later as the cost when way down. I paid near 1500 bucks for dual injectors back in the mid 90s or so when building up my old 955sp and later they were going for 300 bucks or less. If VIN does not prove an SP then it was made to look like one by addition of parts after the fact. It was not too difficult to make one like a 916SP, they had G/A cams so anyone who can identify cam casting numbers or degree them can tell. The SP cams had near 300 degrees of duration as opposed to stock with 260. Also had better rods and slightly bigger valves. The valves in some cases give it away. Anyone can change injectors, of course it had to have P8 but lots of early stradas did. Dont let this get you down. a minty SP is worth some bucks and it would take a literal dumbass to part with one without knowing what he had. I would say to a collector, aka Japanese, a mint SP might be one of the most
desireable of all modern and could fetch bucks near what they did new. They are very very rare. Noone would purposely take off upper triple number plate I do not think and they had that identifying them. I still have tons of info on SPs as I later mid to latrer 90s built a 955 SP using the earlier SP as something of a blueprint, course Clayton still gets the nod for being most expert in this area and Alex and Clayton are buds going way back. I was at least a year or so behind Clayton in such things. For what it is worth any of the newer testas will stomp it, My old 955SP with a bit more poke than a 916SP, 125 rwhp and 75 foot pounds, would be stomped by the 996R I currently own with a measly 143 at rear wheels..

Hi there,
Just joined and asking questions already!! I have just bought a '95 916
which now turns out to be a 916SP as it has twin injectors and expensive
sparkplugs? so the mechanic told when i left it in for exploratory service,
apparently it needs new a throttle sensor? i have been told as it is not
setting correctly for idle etc that it will need replaced. Does anyone know
how much these things are, if they are
repairable, will regular 916 throttle sensor do or will it have to be a SP
one?
I am also unsure of the bikes SP pedigree, i only paid bp money as when i
checked the VIN i was told it would say SP in chassis no which it doesnt,
however the mechanic has seen plenty of them and assures me it is an early
SP engine wise, which was backed by previous owner, the service book said
SP, clock is in Km, Carbon mudguard(no proof i know) and the engine and
chassis numbers match. any way of finding for sure or do i have to write to
Ducati??
Any answers much appreciated. And if i bought the bike off you, sorry, you
may have been right!!
