They bring the power and weight down, but now the corner speeds go up to
compensate and they end up running almost as fast as before.
This was Mladin's gripe when the AMA decided to make the 600's the Formula
Extreme and try to make it the premiere class. Most of the US tracks don't
have safety issues in areas where the bikes are upright running flat out.
The areas of real safety concern were the corners and the supersport 600's
were already running higher corner speeds on almost stock suspension. Now
you allow superbike level suspension and engine tuning and you have bikes
running faster through these more dangerous areas. So the idea of slowing
down the lap speeds my moving the emphasis to a smaller capacity actually
back fires in areas where safety is more of a concern.
With the MotoGP capacity reduction, I think what we are seeing here is that
the 990cc bikes heavily needed the use of traction control to tame their
corner exit. With slightly less power and lighter weight, the rear tire is
not worked quite so hard and the traction control can be adjusted
accordingly, so by the first race we will see faster lap times than the
990's.
So again the idea to slow the bikes by reducing the capacity actually works
in reverse in the areas where the riders most often crash, the corners.
