Also, it would make a nice torquey and light track day bike.  How about a
special edition Pantah 1100SL (Superlight), with tons of carbon, forged
wheels and Öhlins suspension.

I think an air-cooled SS edition makes a lot more sense then a 749 or
859 version. The air-cooled motor has to cost less. It would not compete
with the 1098 and nobody buying an air cooled 1000c bike would seriously
look at it as competition for the 600cc race bikes from Japan. It would
in fact be what my 908SSP was and what might have been if Ducati hadn't
hired You Know Who. It would in fact help amortize the cost of the 1098
by attracting an older more mature crowd not in need of the fastest
thing on the road but still wanting a high style racy bike.
