tachs should be analog. or if digital, they should be made to resemble the 
sweep of a needle by having the display screen sweep to indicate a portion 
of the screen filled with a number index above or below. a simple glance can 
tell you the "area" of the rev range which is more important than seeing the 
actual number.  flashing a number which changes almost too quickly for the 
mind to recognize and make the extrapolation.

I recall studies have been done to show that tachs should be analog and 
speedometers should be digital. it's the way the mind "recognizes" things...
