[Ducati] Ethanol blends

This link is pretty good. Picked it up off a Cessna 150/152 email group I am
a member of. Big issues in the light aircraft business with using this type
fuel.

Only a few Ducati's have O2 sensors, at least the one's sold here in the
'states. The only ones that have them are the ones that catalytic converters
on them. I suppose Ducati had to put an O2 sensor on those to make sure the
cat didn't melt and/or otherwise overheat. Still, an O2 sensor on an FI
engine is a great idea, with or without a cat. I just wish there was an
aftermarket ECU available that accepted an O2 sensor input. The oem ECU has
static mapping, from what I can tell, which is a pain to deal with really.

Not sure about ethanol, but we used to run our methanol bikes a lot richer,
like 5x the volume of fuel compared to petrol. Engines ran cooler and made
more power.

Ethanol should have more available carbons for oxygen than methanol but not
as many as regular petrol, so I would think that you could experiment with
going slightly richer. I would also think that the oxygen sensor in the
exhaust should pick up excess O2 and cause the mixture to richer
automatically.

So, all you should notice with an efi bike is slightly (maybe 5% ?) heavier
fuel consumption. I wonder if this happens in practice.

Stuart

I wonder if there is a way to optimize ignition or valve timing to get
better performance out of this stuff?
