[Ducati] "Breakaway" helmets

Rob:

Here's my problem: If all helmets are designed to have things like vents
break off on impact, why was it only my last two Arai's (not the first) that
fell off repeatedly in normal use in the first year? And, why after all my
years of motorcycling (including many years as an MSF Instructor) have I
never heard this before 2006? I suppose it could be just me, but that's hard
to believe, given my interest in motorcycling.

Hey, Bruce -

Generally speaking, helmets are *entirely* designed to self-destruct, giving
their lives to save your head, as it were. I don't have any specific
information, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if vents and faceplate
retainers and other miscellaneous bits and pieces were designed to "break
away". My Arai Quantum had the little plastic vent deflector thingy on top
fall off after about a year and a half after a minor jolt. I ended up
taping over the vent holes because without the deflector thingy the helmet
whistled like a tin flute. =)
