we probably replace a few sets a year. they only come s a pair, but i believe the price has come down over the last few years. generally only one fails, so you build up a stock of good s/h units you can solder in (fun job). wire wise just make sure it's clear of everything. it's pretty straight forward. i usually check them at the wires going in and i've maybe seen one bad wire compared to a heap of open circuit pick ups over the years.
there was a service bulletin for up to '97 bikes from memory about alt nuts, altho very few of those came loose. it was a 'include this at the 10,000 km service, but we won't pay for it' thing. realistically, it was a waste of money for 99% of owners, so we rarely did it. we did a lot of 750ss from one particular year i think and a few others - occaisional 851, etc. wasn't that big an issue tho. they just knock at idle and, if the nut has just lost its torque, but is not actually loose yet, it may knock as you let the clutch out and load the driveline.
the late 3 phase alt problem is a bit different - there was allegedly a nut issue. no recall or even service info on them. torque spec for 4v was raised to 270nm in '99 and for 2v also for '05. you know they're loose when the glunk - glunk noise the cluch makes at idle doesn't go away when you pull the clutch in. clutch pushrod broken at o-ring groove is also a good indication. we only ever use new std nuts and green wurth loctite (the strong stuff) and don't have problems again.
