[Ducati] DUC 998 S - engine problem

Flywheel rotor etc coming loose has been a recurring problem with Ducatis for some time. Typically this happens when flywheel is changed out for an aftermarket flywheel and the retaining nut is not properly torqued. I do believe over the course of the past 10 years flywheel nut torque may even have been addressed as a factory bulletin, meaning it was not a recall but an advisory to shops to at least for it as a potential problem. Some of us have been fortunate to simply discover a loose nut. This was the case with me at least once. In another case nut was loose enough that it wallowed out keyway on rotor and I had to replace rotor. So it does happen, usually it will make noise or present other problems before it goes so far as to damage stator and pickups. But it is not an unheard of problem, what is worth noting is the 998 has a substantially more robust nut than earlier models. I replaced the 998 nut with Hichols double nut as I still think double nut more difficult to
loosen, but I debated doing that since stock nut was so much more substantial than earlier models. The Nichols nuts are the way to go though once you have addressed other repair issues. Once picups, stator etc are involved it gets more expensive. perhaps you can find parts on eBay or from the used parts breakers But Nichols nuts is a definte , that is Nichols Manufacturing.

Hi all. (1st time in this forum!)
I am from Portugal and use my 998S Final Edition mainly for track days.
I would like to know if someone had a similar incident in a Ducati.
For some reason the magnetic flywheel contacted the alternator coils =
ripping them apart from the case.
The result is a bent crankshaft apart from all the evident damage. See =
the photos.
The bike is 2 years old with 8.800 Kms on the clock and I bought it new, =
me being the only driver.
Any ideas?
Regards
Francisco
