[Ducati] oil cooler relocate

DIrk, I think you will find in alot of cases none of the OEMs leave raw aluminum alone, almost all is anodized or clear coated to prevent just the oxidation you mention. Some of the heat rejection paint is very good.

The least "stuff" in the way between the oil and the air, the better. Aluminum always has a thin oxide coating on it unless it's been etched for painting. This oxidation takes place very fast and is very thin so it's really best to just leave it raw aluminum and then just replace the cooler if it gets really crusty from exposure to salt and other chemicals.

Except black paint. Factories often paint radiators black, pipes black etc to help with heat rejection. If a company like Honda thinks it a good idea I would bet they spent alot of time thinking about the reasons why. Of course the problem always is how do you paint and how well do you paint, too think would obviously be a problem.

Since we're on the subject.....
The paint on my oil cooler is flaking off. I've considered repainting it and I've considered taking off all the paint with a solvent and leaving it nude. I know that removing the paint would lower the units emissivity (black is the most emissive color, white, which is pretty close to silver, the least), but I don't think the cooler loses much heat via radiation anyway.
Does anyone on the list have an opinion regarding this subject?
If I want to paint it, what paint should I use? I suppose something that stands up well to heat and will lay on thin to maximize heat transfer. How about brand names of paints or whatever you recommend?
Thanks, in advance.
