I do a lot of sport but since passing 40 have found it is harder to keep the
weight off. Running is my least favourite discipline and I know it does not
suite everyone but it is a sure way to shed. Unfortunately to start burning
stored fat, you need to pass 40 minutes at medium intensity. If you can
manage 3 one hour runs a week, you will soon notice the flab starting to
melt. It's a lot easier to talk and have good intentions than to do, but
the results can be worth it. The nice things about running are that you can
do it anywhere, only costs about $100 to get started and runners are a
really friendly bunch.

If anyone wants to start, be sure to ok it with the doc first if you have
been off exercise for a long time and build the first 12 weeks gently, don't
go over 20 minutes in a session. This is because the muscles (including you
heart) get fit a lot quicker than the bones and tendons adapt to the new
stresses. A lot of new runners feel great after 2 or 3 weeks and go for it.
They then end up with stress injuries that put them worse off than when they
started.

Sorry about the fitness lecture but it is a passion of mine - it helps keep
you young (along with bikes of course)

Stuart
