I own a Y2K 996S (#344). The information that you have received is correct and accurate. The USA 996S series generated 500 motorcycles and consists of SPS frame, suspension (combination olins rear, olins st.damper/Showa front, until 01 when it became 100% front & rear Olins), carbon fiber and up graded carbon fiber termis, with a Strada engine.
While the european edition put out 123 Bhp, the stock 996S or 996 strada delivered 113Bhp. However, by closing two of the four injectors and changing chips, along with a few other odds & ends, you can increase the Bhp from 113 to back up to 123Bhp or more.

Subject: [Ducati] 1999 996S question
Just got this question from a friend regarding a 1999 996S. He's trying to
determine what that model year offered and has been given conflicting
information. The question is:
some information states that these motorcycles had the SPS cams and high
comp pistons @ 123hp other info states that the motor is the same as a 996 only
with big term exhaust and a chip.
Anybody know for certain?
Vicki
