The "S" is a stock version 996 here in the USA. Even the "SPS" never came
with high compression pistons that year! I've read in the brochures, but
have torn down a SPS motor and found 996 Biposto slugs. The heads are the
same as well, with the exception of a brass water fitting. You got a rear
Ohlins and that was it on 1999 "S" and "SPS". 2000 or 2001 you got the front
Ohlins forks on the "S" and "SPS" version. If he thinks he has a 123 hp
motor have him look for a P8 computer out back. I heard that the Euro
versions got the SPS motor, but have no first hand experience with a Euro
"S". The "SPS" came with a 50mm set of track pipes, as well as the
stockers. While the "S" came with stock mufflers only.
If he has pictures have your friend send me a few. I'd be more than happy to
lend a hand!
