Hi Bruce,
The first time I did an oil change on my 996 I had the same question and
didn't remove the screen as it was held on really tight. As I read through
my manuals they all showed it out, so the next time I changed my oil I used
more than a "reasonable force" and finally broke it loose. It looks like the
one in the following link, except that instead of the hex head it has an
allen head. Not something I think you can break that easily. :-)

Subject: [Ducati] Oil screen on 996
Hi,
I started to do an oil change on my 996 at lunch time as the weather
looked great for a warm up ride (been a bit grey and wet around here)
This will be the second oil change for me, the first time I didn't
remove the oil screen, so I thought I better this time. The oil screen
has cover with an allen key socket (unlike the bolt on the 916). I
removed the cover ok, but the screen doesn't want to budge with
reasonable force (again unlike the 916 one which just comes out without
needing to be un-screwed). Any hints here? What is the screen made of?
If it's plastic I don't want to break it trying to undo it.
Cheers
Bruce
