[Ducati] 996: Tips/tricks to checking vert exhaust valves?

I'm trying to inspect the valve clearances on my 996,
and having some trouble measuring the loaded valve
clearance on the vertical cylinder exhaust valves.
For all the other valves, I've used a screwdriver to
press down on the closing rocker, and then measure the
clearance.  On the vert cylinder though, I can't get
anything to reach the rocker from above (the
frame/suspension gets in the way), and from the
sides/rear, I can't get enough leverage to push down
the rocker without the tool popping off.
I tried to bend a screwdriver so I could angle in and
reach the rocker from the top, but I ended up snapping
off the tip.  Surely, there must be some tool or trick
to doing this...
