[Ducati] 900 Ducati SSCR on ebay, thoughts?

Josh,
I have to say the opposite -- I've watched 900ss cr and sp machines
sell for a while because I like those (the mid 90s models) and the
typical price on them runs about 3500 while the SPs sell for about
4000. The "completed auctions" function is a good barometer on
ebay. Plenty of bikes listed with reserves or above 4000 but few sell.
Frankly, I am surprised at the criticism of the CR. It is
functionally identical to the SP, and most people confuse them. Yes,
you get an aluminum swingarm and adjustable forks with the SP, but
most people don't need either. The goldline master clutch and brake
on the SP are bling only and quite identical internally to the coffin
type (both have same size piston). The free floating rear brake on
the SP is interesting, but I don't think you'll be racing it, no?
Of the SPs I've seen, none one them have the original cast iron
rotors as they cost and arm+leg to replace, so the owners just get
the "regular" stainless ones.
A mid-90s CR in good shape and decent miles should sell for around
3000. 2500 for a well maintained specimen is not bad, especially as
it seems the seller has his records and can show service (plus, he
sounds like this bike is not his only Ducati - a true Ducatista who
loves his bikes).
I know of an SP in Staten Island that the seller is insisting on a
firm $4700. IT has 29K miles and looks great, but it's not ridden
much and he doesn't have any service records and couldn't even give
me a straight answer about what kind of oil and filter he uses (I
asked, he said "Ducati brand oil".. uh... yeah..Ducati oil...)
If the bike is mechanically good, get it. If the look of the SP
makes you happier, buy a set of full fairings. I doubt you'll notice
the difference while you are zooming down the road. There are also
two SP type swingarms on ebay right now.
For the record, I have had both. I sold the SP because the buyer
made me a crazy offer, the CR was partially "converted" to an SP by a
previous owner, but I doubt I can tell the difference.. It pops
wheelies in 2nd gear just fine.
