Mark: Thank you so much for your advice which I surely will take to heart. Alex: I,m not sure which direction I,m taking; if I end up selling my bogus SP you'll be out of luck for my parts. AND "dbjones" I must apologize for accidently deleting your message in my "inbox". I'm a "net neophite" and a hunt and peck typist; between the two your response was erased. So, if you wouldn't mind, and your original message to me is in your "sent" file, would you pleeeeeese send it again. My only real problem with the SP bodied CR was that it wasn't an SP. For 2 or 3 months I thought I had "the top of the line Ducati"; the bike formerly featuered in Egan's column in Cycle World every month for years. I had taken a wonderfull several week trip over to Vermont, north through Vt. to Quebec, followed the St. Lawrence to the ocean, traveled Prince Edward Island, and enjoyed Maine for a while. I literally took dozens of pictures of the Ducati. I was smitten. But it really
hurt, when within seconds of seeing my Ducati the mechanic told me I don't have the Ducati I thought I had and the reasons why!!!! Thanks everyone for your replies and queries. Carl Alberico

Great coverage last night on the new Speed TV show "Superbikes" of the
Ducati Monster Challenge and Barbers. Almost made up for the idiotic first
episode. The show is redeeming itself. Not bad. I think it airs again tonight.
Also "Corbin"s Ride On" had some unbelievable video of a ride thru Sicily on
Moto Guzzis. What a beautiful place!

There is one chance in 100,000 that you managed to snap a belt at the
right time.
If your belt snapped right as a valve was closing, it is possible
that the piston moved to TDC without hitting a valve. if there was
any inertia in the camshaft, it might have been spent opening and
closing the other valve.
make sure your piston is at BDC, remove the spark plug then manually
rotate the cam pulley. if there is no binding or unusual noises, you
may have escaped unscathed. if you can get hold of a fiber optic,
you can run it into the plug hole and look at the valves. some
mechanics have them, also inspect the piston head. if you smacked a
valved, the carbon crust will be scratched and you'll have a
silver/grey gash on the crown.
DON'T START the engine until you've made certain you've not bent a
valve. take the battery out just to be safe.
timing on the pulleys is set by a mark on both of them against a mark
on the case / head. it's pretty easy, you should pick up a shop
manual, which explains it in about 1/4th of a page.
if you managed to snap a belt at the right time, i recommend you go
buy a lottery ticket!

Had a question regarding the dinner at the Hill house at Laguna Seca MotoGP
weekend, wondering if all Ducatisti were welcome?
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The annual dinner will have lots of high quality home brew beer, and lots of
food, but please just shoot me an email if you plan to attend so we can
ensure there will be ample food. Please do so before this coming friday
afternoon (14th), as I will start riding for california this weekend. Dinner
and Beer is $10, can't beat that price. Lots of cool bikes to look at, and
great people to talk to.
Just up and over the Los Laureles grade from the track, turn left at the
stop sign (Carmel Valley Road) and look for the white picket fence of Los
Laureles lodge. Cars must park on street or below, bikes can come up the
steep drive to the house. You can see a picture of the house if you google
for Los Laureles lodge. It is at the top center photo of the home page.
See you there!
Its going to be a great moto gp, with Rossi needing to pull out all the
stops, can Hayden win again at Laguna?

If there are signs of rocker wear the next time I check the valves on my 98
916, I was planning on sending all of the openers out to have them fixed
and using the MBP collets. I have heard of using BCM, Megacycle, and MBP
to do this. I have heard Megacycle is good, but that they have had some
flaking problems too and that when they go, they go fast. Which service
would be best for street use and longer service intervals (due to the MBP
collets)? I am leaning toward MBP but I haven't heard much feedback on
their rocker service. Thanks.

To whom it may concern: I own a 1996 900 SS CR and I would like to buy everything I need to make it into an SS SP, EXCEPT the full fairing which I have. Not being knowledgable about Ducatis I bought, from a Japanese motorcycle dealership, my beautiful red full fairinged Ducati thinking it was "the top of the line" model. So I would like to post my desire to acquire these used parts: 1) a complete SP front end ( Showa 3 way adjustable shocks, brakes: cast iron disc and full floating calipers,120/70-17 front tire, carbon fiber fender), 2) a complete rear end (Showa 3 way adjustable shock, aluminum swing arm, 5.5" rim, carbon fiber inner fender, floating underslung brake, 170/60-17 rear tire), 3) carbon fiber clutch cover, 4) sound deadening material for full fairing and whatever else an SP has that a CR does not. I found this list, which I'm not sure is complete, from a comparison of these two models at "ducatitech.com". Thank you for your time, Carl T. Alberico

I have a 5.5" rear wheel and a Showa adjustable shock if you're interested.
Pic at www.woundedduc.net
CR/SP front calipers are the same. You don't have the remote reservoir
brake and clutch mastercylinders on the list. Also, the SP has an oil
temperature gauge, which is going to take a different gauge cluster and a
different wiring harness to upgrade to.
If you really want an SP, you'd be money ahead to sell you CR and just buy
an SP. The price difference on the used market is only about $1,000-$1,500,
and you'll spend two to three times that trying to turn your CR into an SP.

Any interest in selling some of the CR parts off your SS? I've got a CR that
could use some new bits.

first episode was lame, second (track school vs. canyons) was very good and
yesterday's was fair. I'll give them a few more episodes to get their

P.S. My old Monster was way nicer than any of the ones last night. Some were
oooogly others were ads for Ducati Performance and CarbonDream. More is not
always more. I liked the light blue one best but the one from the year
before (2005) was nicest.

I agree, with that. I haven't seen last nights episode, but did like the
second one. I am all for motorcycle coverage, so I hope they continue to add
some good content to the silly stuff.
