I can relate ... my friend Dave rides a 20 yrs old Beemer; he rides in the
same way, without making a lot of "noise". The results are the same: at the
first bend he is gone ...
I then learned that he was a good racer.

Reminds me of a similar experience.
I was just beginning to feel competent, and fast, on my 900 SS (can't
remember which one). I was out for the weekend and riding in the Sierra
foothills. Affter a few hours of warming up on various roads, I finally
reached the real fun part, state road 49 going south to Mariposa - nothing
but twisties. As I approached the intersection, I did not see any cars on
49, but just as I reached it, a Beamer passed. I took off after him,
expecting a bit of fun before passing him. He was riding very sedately,
sitting upright and not leaning much. I kept pace as we entered the first
left hander. As my left peg touched down and scraped along the tarmac, I
thought ("f___," this guy's going fast." I had to back off a little for the
next bend.I felt like I was at my limit, but the man in front seemed to be
almost upright, and hardly moved at all as he went round each curve.
Needless to say, I never passed the guy, but wached him slowly pull away as
he casually eased his machine through the !
bends
that had me hanging off my seat.
I learned my lesson, but still needed to learn how to ride.--
