They took away the only track that really would of made for some cool racing
and that track is.......or was.....Riverside. Actually I loved the place
for its rustic quality. Ah the ole line to get into what most people would
avoid, the most retched spot on earth, the Porta Potty ! Grand stands...we
didnt need no stinkig Grand stands, we sat in our car, sat on our bike or
took purchase along many viewpoints around the track in the dirt. They did
have a couple of Grand Stands but I dont remember them because I never used
them. They did have a fairly large in the banked section before the
technical section came up. Watching "Flyin Fred Merckle" rip through the
esses at full throttle on the ole interceptors was a lesson on "You Got Big
Ones Son"! Of course we didnt have souviner row back then and if you wanted
a cold frosty ya better hurry because the Little League size consession
stand emptied the kegs fast. Oh you could get souviners if you walked into
the pits, without a fancy Lanyard with a Pass enclosed in plastic and an
official seal of some kind in hologram stamped on it, and pick up a tire hot
off of the track. No charge, really ! Then again there was Pomona with it's
temporary parking lot track. That thing was sooooo lumpy the guys spent most
of time there on the pegs or bitching to the officials that the place was
crazy unsafe. I guess the ARMCO around certain places and the chain link was
somewhat ominus. Funny thing was , That was some of the best racing I will
ever probably ever see because I was next to the track and could almost
smell the sweat off of the riders as they tore by. And talk about the
experience of feeling your chest vibrate as a 888 Ferrachi Duc rips past you
at full song , man you havent lived. I always wanted to perfect some way to
catch the essence of the exhaust and hot rubber into a spray to bring back
that memory. When they tore down Riverside because the new home owners didnt
like the noise or dust , it broke my heart. Well along comes Ontario
Raceway, an oval.....Yawn ! I never went to that track because I was so
bitter about the Murder of Riverside I swore I never would. By By Ontario, I
guess people wasnt ready for left hand turners and NASCAR at that point.
They tore it down for, you guessed it, more homes ! Damn , what does a guy
need to do to have a real track close to home ? Anyway along comes Fontana
and another big circle of boredom. But wait, they eventually develope an in
track circuit and you know it is kinda funny but the only good place to
watch IMHO, is on the slippery concrete flat portion of the track where you
at least can read the sponsers logo as the guy goes by. Good seating is not
in those areas but I tell you what , if I could park my bike at the place
next to the track, I sure would ! I'm sure you guys and gals have some great
memories of the tracks "Back In The Day" so lets hear some. Hey it's the
Holidays and it always makes me remember good times and Riverside was the
best ! HAPPY HOLIDAYS GUYS AND GALS !!!
