I ran 14/38 on my ST4s all the way to Texas, from California, and it was perfectly happy cruising at 80-90 Mph, will run in 6th from 70 on, still has no trouble hitting 140+ when insanity hits me. When I replaced the chain at 18K I went to 15/41 on the theory that the bigger sprockets would result in less chain wear, but there is not doubt that most Ducks are over geared stock and can benefit by gearing down for real world riding. so I'm thinking of switching from my standard 15/36 final drive to a 14/38. is anyone out there running a bigger ratio and if so why? is 14/38 too much already?
also, while ripping into all the ratio info I realized the 916 is one of those wounded models with the 2:1 primary drive ratio. meaning the same gear teeth meet each other every other revolution. has anyone had their primary drive gears fail because of this? my motor's pushing 27K miles. when it's time to do a rebuild I'm wondering if the primary gears can be switched out for something more reasonable... or if it's worth it.
