So what's wrong with a 5mm allen on a 2V? Frequency seems like a lot of unnecessary BS.

Yes, you pluck it and the belt will vibrate.
Dan Mullen has done some experimenting with this.
Note that you need to get the fundimental of the belt, not pick up a
harmonic.
