actually, there's an interesting theory that actually makes a lot of
sense.  when you're talking to a passenger they are there next to you
and your brain, which tends to be visual, doesn't have to work super
hard during the conversation.  however, when you are talking on the
phone, your brain is forced to visualize the person you are talking to
which takes a lot more cycles and therefore make phone conversations
much more difficult.

I've tried this simple experiment.  have my wife call me while I'm
coding.  then have her talk to me in person while I'm coding.

no wait, both times we ended up arguing.  nevermind :D
