My $.02,
I think its all about paying attention to what you're doing at the
moment.
Whether you are talking on the cell phone, engaged in a conversation
with your passenger, eating your lunch, putting on your makeup,
reading the newspaper or watching the NCAA basketball playoffs on
your dashboard mounted T.V. (yes, I really saw some idiot doing that
once), you only have so much attention to spend (thanks, Keith Code).

Headsets, cup holders or vanity mirrors do not make sharing the road
any more safe. Laws that punish people for being stupid do not seem
to work so well, i.e., seatbelt/helmet laws. That leaves only
education and more comprehensive driving tests ( like in Germany).

As for passengers warning you about an impending collision, they're
usually too busy looking for the dropped bottle opener. :-)
