"Would anyone on a Duc have been that stupid???"

Of course they would have. Maybe not everyone on a Duc, but then again not
everyone on a HD would have been so stupid. I remember freezing once coming
into a corner too fast. I was 16 on a 50cc Honda and had been on the road
for less than a week. I ended up in the bushes on the other side of the
road with a bruised ego. Luckily nobody saw it happen, let alone record it
for posterity on video.

To me the best lesson from all this is that beginners should go out and make
mistakes on a little bike that can't get them into serious trouble.
Preferably a 125 off road bike on a trail somewhere or in an old gravel pit.
Then move onto the dream machine, whatever that may be.

Should the cage have stopped? - at least he could have hung out the window
and asked if the guys could handle it. That way if they had turned nasty
(not very likely) he could have locked up and driven off. If they were
going to chase him, they would have anyway.
